World Summit Award for World Cleanup app

Let’s Do It’s World Cleanup App has been recognised by a prestigious international award, in the World Summit Awards (WSA) 2018.

WSA is an international competition which aims to select and promote the world’s best startup companies in digital content and innovative applications.

The World Cleanup App, which has been used by over 3000 people in 151 countries to map waste pollution hotspots, won the Award in the category of Environment & Green Energy.

WSA have a non-monetary award system with a focus on sustainable knowledge transfer through a worldwide network. This means that winners benefit not from a one-time financial reward, but a lifelong partnership.

Benefits of this partnership include participation in the WSA Global Congress; access to valuable networks of developers, experts, and industry leaders worldwide; interaction with world-renowned sponsors and partners; workshops shaped especially to suit the winners’ needs, and numerous promotional opportunities within the WSA channels.

Kristiina Kerge, Let’s Do It’s Technology Manager, was overjoyed with the win and very grateful for the time and passion her team of staff and volunteers had put in to achieve it. She said: “I am very proud to be a part of this team.”

Explaining the purpose of the app, Kerge says: “Our mission is to get as many people to notice mismanaged waste as possible, because we are working to raise awareness about the global waste issue. The initiative is a unique combination of social good and innovation”.

The app was a citizen science initiative developed to identify areas of mismanaged waste to be cleaned on World Cleanup Day, September 2018. Crucially, it is also helping build the most detailed database of mismanaged waste in the world, the World Waste Platform, which will be used to inspire new approaches to a circular economy by showcasing the data about illegal dumpsites around the world.
