The story goes that a God flew over the ocean and a few teardrops fell into the water, one of them became Siargao Island. It’s now known as a paradise, one of the few islands, where you still feel that you are ‘off track’, a little outside the world.

The island of Siargao, in Surigao del Norte, has established itself as the surfing Mecca of the Philippines. Its prime surfing spot known as Cloud Nine boasts really great swells and is hailed as among the best in the world. Several international competitions are held here every year, especially on the surfing season from August to December

The surf capital of the Philippines is not only known as a surfers paradise, it also has mangroves, coconut farms, rice fields, green hills, millions of palm trees, reef beaches, fantastic locals, dirt roads, untouched spots, karaoke machines, roosters, resorts, dirty kitchens, a boulevard, banka banka boats, surf guides, surfistas, buko shakes, organic coffee, great fishing, beach discos, bars, and the famous resort Villa Solaria.

It´s always been sleeping place with a chill life style, but for the past eighteen months, the island has seen a boom. Investors are lining up, big money is coming to the island, resorts, restaurants and much more is popping up everywhere. You can sense the smell of money all over the island, people are getting greedy, trying to make a Peso out of every foreigner, and prices are rising. The old dirt road is now a concrete street with no lights. Speed kills as we all know and that has happened on many different occasions on this famous road, called the Tourist Road.

Surfing is still number one on the island, but all the new tourists that hit the island also bring big problems when it comes to infrastructure, communication, logistics and waste management. Trash blindness is everywhere, people are living in small dumps, they litter anywhere and the awareness is very low – but it´s getting better and better. One step forward is:

Sea movement wants a united community empowered to protect our limited natural resources and committed to strive for sustainable development in order to maintain a healthy and clean environment that raises the quality of life of the present and future generations.

Nature Kids, so every child of Siargao Island attains the right to survival, education and environmental knowledge, working for the protection of nature and a clean green Siargao island.

Siargao Recycling Art Studio, a non-profit project where we upcycle trash into new items that you can buy. Educating local households, students and businesses in eco-kindness. Our new venue is located centrally in General Luna, just on the right side of the public indoor gymnasium close to Boulevard / Food market. We are a few metres away from Miguels Tacco Place. The official name of the venue is Women Training Center and DSWD have their office in the same building.

These are the organizations that educate and do cleanups, recycling programs, educational and reusing ideas that bring a new dimension into people’s mind when it comes to waste. Waste management is very poor on the island, a few trucks, a very bad dump, people burn trash every day without any thoughts of what harm it does. Open fires with plastic, rubber and household waste are very toxic and dangerous, it should be banned as soon as possible.

Cleanups are done every week and all on a volunteer basis, people shows up at announced spots, different every week, participate 1-2 hours, discuss a little, get some information, get a little awareness and a big thank you for being there. Today you helped Siargao island to be a better place to live in, today you made a difference, today you were a part of a very important event and today you showed everybody that you care, that you are a earth friendly human or as we Also can call you a hero!

YES, we can change! Just as it’s possible to get most people to wear seatbelts, quit smoking and stop driving drunk. Municipalities has never taken the logical steps needed to create a successful society wide recycling/source separating/cleaning habit — and today it may not be in the economic interest of some of the big recycling companies to build it. The fact is that, recycling centers are closing down, especially in the US, this is scary development we should of course go the other way. Make a manifestation participate on 15 September on World Cleanup Day all over the world! Siargao Island, Sea Movement and Natures Kid are all on board for this historical moment!
