This weekend there will be large-scale volunteer actions taking place in 6 different countries. These cleanups are part of a global grass-root action World Cleanup 2012, aimed to unite the society in participating countries to fight illegal dumping problem and lack of awareness about protecting the environment.


World Cleanup 2012

Cleanup project: Let's Do It! Armenia – 15.09.2012 (All day)

Short overview
The cleanup took place in all the territory of Armenia. The Let's do it! Armenia was initiated by Young Biologists Association NGO and the movement consist of more than 50 NGO's, international organizations, schools, governmental organizations. On September 15 more than 50 organizations and more than 2600 volunteers participated in the "Armenia without garbage" pan-Armenian volunteer initiative organized by Let's do it! Armenia. In several spots, the participants sorted the garbage and sent it to the recycling organizations. Ministry of Nature Protection organized cleanups in Nature Specially Protected Areas. The Police of Armenia cleaned the surrounding territories of their departments. International organizations (EU delegation in Armenia, Representation fo European Council in Armenia etc.) and embassies (US, British, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan etc.) participated also. Situation before the cleanup
The situation regarding illegal dump sites is catastrophic. There are a lot of dumps and we need to organize mapping action. We tried to raise awareness on cultural sites and natural areas, which became a dump.
Organizing
Structure. The core team consisted of 20 young people who are mainly representatives of different organizations which are part of the Let's do it! Armenia. Let's do it! Armenia was established in the end of 2011 under initiative of Young Biologists Association and it became an open platform for all interested organizations, non-formal groups and volunteers. Any organization can join the movement.
Finance. We have no financial resource, donation or grant.
Partners. The in-kind contribution (bags, gloves and transportation) to the campaign was done by our partners AniPlast company, Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Armenia CJSC.
Volunteers. About 50 organizations and 2600 people
Waste
Short overview of mapping. The mapping activities were initiated but as a result of absence of financial resources for transportation etc, we have no opportunity to organize overall mapping of trashed areas.
